Should Teachers Share Socially with Students

Facebook and MySpace are all the rage. They are a very popular way for people to connect socially with others. Is it appropriate for teachers? I just had to read two articles for my Masters class that are opposite ends of the spectrum on this issue. I have a hard time with one article saying that teachers should not be allowed to open their own Myspace or Facebook page...and some are even being fired over it. On the other side the second article states that educators should be able to "share, blog and flirt" just like the rest of the world. Why do people need to take such extremes? It seems like our society is such a gluttonous place...we can't ever do anything in moderation. Is it possible for teachers like me to still be given the rights of freedom without crossing the line?

men and global warming!

Ok.. I have to say as far as men go...I got a pretty good one. Jerrod is sitting at the table riggin' up spinner baits to take me and the kids fishin' tomorrow. He even watched Nights at Rodathe with me the other night...and only made one snide remark :) I love that my children have his amazing blue eyes. i kinda like him...

Anyways...I have to tell you something my kids said about their father the other day that made me laugh hysterically...

I say, "kids...we need to be thinking of something really special to celebrate daddy for Fathers Day."

Adelyn says to Kade under her breathe, "Why do we celebrate Father's Day...we don't have any little girls day?"

Kade says..."Ad, if we didn't have father's than we wouldn't have any global warming! If we didn't have dad's then their armpits wouldn't sweat to create global warming!!"

HA!!

Educationally Speaking

I've created this blog as an endeavor in my Masters program through Michigan State University. I will finish up this summer and I am very excited about putting all my new found tricks and education into practice. Currently, I have earned a Masters in Curriculum through Michigan State University and have a Bachelors of Arts in French through Grand Valley State University.

I am a very happily married, mother of three. My children are 4, 6 and 8 (well in 2 weeks.) As my children progress through the school system I find my philosophy and teaching style changing. It's a good change. My husband is an environmental engineer and I have no idea what he really does. I just tell my children Daddy is a scientist that asks like a cop for Mother Nature.

This is my 10th year of teaching. OH MY GOLL! To begin I taught 5-6 ELL and worked in the migrant camps teaching adults to speak English. That was a completely rewarding job. Next, I taught ELL and had forty-four students from 14 different countries. I had a total of 16 language in my one classroom. It was crazy madness and we laughed constantly. Laughter seems to be a common language when faced with communication issues. From then on I've been teaching 3rd graders and adoring every second of it. Third graders are at a perfect age for learning...everything is fun....and behavior really isn't a problem yet. Not to mention every 3rd grader still thinks his or her teacher is perfect....even though I constantly forget where a comma goes...is it inside or outside of the parenthesis!

I am a happy person.
